The history of Gamer-Island

Gamer-Island has existed, in one form or another, since 2011. This page tells the story of its four lives, using the site's own archives: database backups with fifteen-year-old timestamps, screenshots nobody remembered taking, and a changelog the site kept about itself.

2011: the original island

The original Gamer-Island banner from 2011

The original site banner, recovered from a Christmas Eve 2011 backup.

The first Gamer-Island was one of a wave of social avatar sites in the early 2010s, alongside names some members will remember, like theGamerLand and jwist. (The community's Minecraft Tekkit server came later.) The original site was hand-written PHP, and no account from that era survives. A news post dated 22 October 2011 explains why, in the site's own words:

“I fixed almost all the errors on the site. We still have no idea who did it… this could mean that the rogue developer is still working for G-I… Before now, only the code has been backed up; we had to make the database all over again.” site news, 22 October 2011

Someone sabotaged the site, the database was rebuilt from nothing, and — you can hear the lesson landing — dated backups begin that exact week. Those backups are why this page exists. They show the forum opening on 11 November 2011 (thread #1: the forum rules, naturally). By Christmas Eve the island had about 141 members, twenty forum threads and 157 replies: arguments about FPS games, a thread asking “who here is from jwist” (members arriving from one of those neighbouring sites), and one member registered simply as spammer.

The same backup preserves 111 items that were lost when the original database was left behind. Here are four of them, examples picked from the recovered set, unseen since 2011:

One detail from these files outlived everything: the item canvas was 125×225 pixels in 2011, and it is 125×225 pixels today. Every item you own is drawn on the same rectangle as the lost ones above.

2012: GIv2, the version you probably remember

Gamer-Island was rebuilt from scratch over the winter, and a private alpha opened in early February 2012. The oldest accounts still on the island joined on 22 February 2012: Silcone, Cuckooclock and Tyga, to name a few of that first day's members, alongside Ashley's own. The first surviving items (Helmet of Evil, White Shirt, Devil Horns) were uploaded two days later.

GIv2 released publicly on Sunday 17 June 2012. What followed were the island's busiest years. 480 members joined in 2012 and 2013, the store filled with member-made items, and the paperwork of a real community piled up: a moderator application form dated January 2012 (before the public launch), terms and conditions written with great seriousness, a game client pitch deck, and a Tekkit server running beside it all. Of the 825 accounts on the island today, 639 date from the GIv2 era.

2015: GIv3

In 2015 the site was rewritten again. Twice, actually; the first framework attempt was abandoned mid-year. GIv3's own changelog opens with “GI 3.0 Creation” on 13 April 2015, and records the launch to the minute:

“GIv3 Public Beta Commences: pushed to http://gamer-island.com/” the site's changelog, 31 July 2015, 00:26

GIv2's members and items were carried across in the first of two great migrations that kept your account alive. The busy GIv2 forum sadly stayed behind on the old server, and is now lost. GIv3 brought the daily login bonus (25 bux, introduced in changelog entry 18) and even had a C# desktop game client in development. The changelog's last entry is August 2016. After that came the long quiet years: still online, a trickle of new members every year, nobody steering.

2020: the rebuild that almost happened

In June 2020 — you can guess what else was happening in the world — a full rewrite began. A hundred commits that summer, a closed alpha in September behind a banner reading “until the beta, data may be wiped at any time”, and then life intervened. The project sat nearly untouched for five years, while the same DigitalOcean server that had hosted the island since roughly 2011 kept GIv3 quietly online the whole time.

2026: the revival

The Gamer-Island store today

The store today, member-made items and all. Some of you will recognise your own work here.

In 2026 the rebuild was finished for real. Every account made the second great migration intact: 825 members with their original join dates, original usernames, and, for most, their original passwords still working. 533 items and 10,453 copies of them came across. Limited items were renumbered so the oldest owner of each holds serial #1, and the things this community asked for a decade ago (trading, a market, achievements) finally exist.

And that old server? Retired on 25 July 2026, after roughly fifteen years of continuous service, its contents archived in full. It outlasted three versions of the site it hosted.

Your part in this

If you had an account, you still do. Same name, same wardrobe, same join date on your profile. Come say hello on the forum; the people who remember GIv2 are the reason it was worth rebuilding.
